Maintenance Clinic March 18th @ Carolina Bicycle Company

How do you change a flat tire? How do I know I have enough tire pressure? How do I clean and maintain my chain? Questions! Questions! Questions! Mark had all the answers! CBC Selan Cybeles held their first Maintenance Clinic at Carolina Bicycle Company on March 18th. Mark was our instructor! Wow...did we have questions! Mark demonstrated how to change a flat tire. Colleen tried her hand at changing a tube on her back tire of her bike. Thumbs up to Colleen! She was a natural at it. We'll know who to ask to change our flats in the future! Mark continued the clinic by demonstrating the appropriate amount of air pressure in your tires depending on the condition of the trail. Casey and her daughter Carson checked her tire to see if she had enough air. She was good! To finish off the evening, Mark demonstrated the best method to clean and lube the chain; while Dana, Connie, Casey, Carson, Colleen and I watched intensely. What fun to be had by all!!! Thank you Mark for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us! More clinics to come...view our calendar on the website www.carolinabicyclecompany.com

Carolina Bicycle Company
Selan Cybele Women's Team Ride

On Sunday, we were joined by six women from the CHOA group from Charlotte. Alison, Lindsay, Casey, Lisa, Dana and Sue. The weather was in the mid-80's with no cloud in site! Before we started our journey onto the singletrack, we took time to discuss adequate air pressure in the our tires per the type of trail we were going to ride. We also discussed safe braking and changing gears based on the terrain we are riding. Colleen and I discussed the maintenance clinic that is to be held Wednesday, March 18th at 6pm at Carolina Bicycle Company at the Huntersville location. After checking our tire pressure, we were all ready to hit the trail! We enter the woods with everyone listening to me say..."Get your butts back!" Colleen reminded me at that point not everyone may understand what I exactly mean and what the intent is to "get your butt back off your seat". I digressed a little to explain while going over obstacles or a decline in the terrain don't lean forward but get your butt back off the seat. Lindsay said..."got it!" Alright! As Colleen and I soon learned Lindsay had some skills! She was going over obstacles, going down hills with some speed...she's done this before. You go Lindsay! Sue was a natural at going over roots. I was soon following her lines! Lisa, Dana and Casey had the whoop-d-dos down to a "science". Colleen and I would stop occasionally to give direction on maneuvering through trees, rolling over logs and roots and looking ahead not down at your front wheel. My passion is to teach and at times I have to be certain I'm not going over the top. Casey, Lisa, Dana, Sue, Alison and Lindsay assured Colleen and I that they were enjoying our skills tips and the ride! It was a beautiful day and a wonderful time riding and getting to know these awesome women!!!! They challenged themselves and had fun while they did it! Come join CBC's Selan Cybele at the Maintenance Clinic Wednesday, March 18th at 6pm in Huntersville. Email annacain6@yahoo.com for directions.

Feb. 21st Fisher Farms Ride

Saturday, Feb. 21st was the perfect day to ride your mountain bike! Sunny and in the mid 60's. Selan Cybeles decided to hold their group ride on Saturday rather than Sunday. Sunday's weather was to be cloudy and raining. Colleen was so excited that she didn't have to dress like an eskimo and strategically plan on how she was going to ride with all that clothing! Speaking of clothing, the team has received their gear! Yes! New gloves, helmet, shoes, etc. Thank you Carolina Bicycle Company and Specialized! No more paintball gloves for Colleen! Connie looks rather "sheek" in that new helmet! The team started riding through the field and into singletrack immediately. "Over the mountains and through the woods to grandmother's house we go..." Oh, wrong time of year...ha! Connie said to heck with the figure eights in the fields and said "I'm ready for the singletrack...bring it on"! In less than an hour, Connie was charging over tree roots and rocks. Colleen and I were successfully staying upright. I believe at some point Connie's favorite obstacles on the trail were the whoop de dos! She was an expert by the end of the ride. I remember when I was clipped into my pedals...falling going around corners, over tree roots, over rocks, going down hills and "yes" even while slowing down. Somehow the floor of the woods begged for me to try out every type of fall. Colleen is not an exception! She experienced her first slowing/stopping fall. It was beautiful! Slow motion, a scream and then laughter! No worries, no injuries. We did learn one wonderful trait about Connie... she is a "dedicated tree hugger"! The tree roots began conspiring with the tree, saw Connie coming around a corner...the rest is history! The tree sustained no injuries; however, Connie continues to nurse along a sprained foot. Colleen helped Connie up, they brushed off the dirt and Connie said to the tree..."I have your name and location...I'll be back later"! Fun, laughter and a good time was had by all! Come join CBC's Selan Cybeles at our next ride...Sunday, March 8th at 1:45pm at North Mecklenburg Park. Ride like there is no tomorrow!

Anne Springs January 25th Ride

What happened to the sun?! Spring cannot get her fast enough! We started our ride at 2pm; moving our start time from 1pm to 1:45pm. However, movement of the ride start time did not make it any warmer. We bundled up with as many riding clothes we could find in our closets. "How do we ride in all this stuff?" Colleen asked. I responded as if I knew the answer...some how you find a way! Off into the woods, as we were helping Connie navigate her way through Fort Mill to find the trailhead. Finding LeRoy Springs Complex can be confusing if you have never been there. The trail was in great shape! Our challenge for the day was to stay "upright" on our bikes and make it over the strategically placed two 2'x4' wooden bridges. Just as Colleen yelled with excitement clearing a couple of those tricky bridges, another would surprise her. Don't look down...look straight ahead where you want to go, I said with much confidence as I have Never gone off one of those things. Ha! We continued on enjoying the trail and moving to stay warm. We were of the most musical group on the trail that day. Colleen would cough from the dry cold air in her lungs and I would follow it up with a good deep cough from the nasty cold I'm fighting. Not the most desired type of music, but at least we knew where each other was in the woods! We stopped close to the end of our ride to scope out a "line" through a "whoop-d-do" and up/over a huge tree root. Let's try this...didn't work...let's try this...good line! As we're preparing to take off to finish, Colleen "in slow motion" falls to her right, still attached to the bike, still clipped in, manages to grab a tree...no doesn't work. There she goes! The Fall's season worth of leaves padded her fall...a "10" on the "graceful fall scale"! As we are gasping for air, due to laughing uncontrollably, Colleen cannot get up. No, she's not hurt. She's laying on the seat of the bike which doesn't allow her to maneuver off the bike frame to get up. Still uncontrollably laughing, I assist Colleen in untangling herself from the bike, tree, leaves...and oh...a group of runners on the trail. Are you ladies okay? Yes, we're just out of control! Ha! I cannot, in all fairness to Colleen, end my dialogue of the day's ride without mentioning my slip or confusion of words pertaining to the "ear" things. Whatever you call those things that keep your ears warm. With no "ear warmers" to keep our ears warm we utilized our long hair...padding and wrapping around our ears. Without "ear warmers"... long hair will make good "ear muffins". Yes, I said "ear muffins". Or as others would say "ear muffs". I prefer "ear muffins"! Come ride with Carolina Bicycle Company's women's team: Selan Cybeles!!!
